YMCA Active
YMCA Active is an in-school program for Yr 6/7 students, aimed at increasing youth participation in physical activity by linking students with sporting opportunities through their school, local sports clubs and recreation centres. This service is provided free of charge to both schools and students.
The key objectives for YMCA Active are:
- To provide opportunity for primary school aged children to participate in a wide variety of new physical activities.
- To make the local sporting clubs and recreation centres more accessible to students.
- To provide the opportunity for students to develop leadership skills and self confidence.
- To provide an opportunity to network with other students of differing cultural, economic and social back grounds.
- To provide high school students with work experience opportunities.
- To improve and increase student, teacher and parent awareness of physical activity opportunities in the local community.
- To improve the health and wellbeing of WA primary school students.
YMCA Active (originally known as YPAAC) commenced as a pilot program with the City of Bayswater 2001. Since 2001, YMCA Active has expanded to include primary schools in City of Swan, Town of Kwinana, City of Gosnells, Eastern Goldfields and the City of Rockingham.
YMCA Active has been recognised on numerous occasions for the program’s success in engaging young people and encouraging their participation in physical activity. This success was most recently highlighted by YMCA Active winning the Department of Sport and Recreation award for Commitment to Participation in 2007.
