YMCA Strong Kids
YMCA Strong Kids was developed based on research conducted by Edith Cowan University’s (ECU) Dr Michael McGuigan and Professor Robert Newton. They found that resistance training has a positive affect on the body composition of overweight and obese children. They also found significant increases in strength and power.
YMCA Strong Kids aims to address the increasing levels of childhood obesity in Australia through the introduction of resistance training within primary schools throughout the Perth Metropolitan area. The major objectives of the program include:
- To include children of all body compositions to establish positive physical activity behaviours.
- To educate children on the benefits of resistance training, nutrition and lifestyle choices.
- To equip schools with the skills and resources required to continue this program following the initial 8 weeks.
- To provide nutritional and lifestyle guidance to parents and teachers through seminars.
With funding provided by the Federal Government, YMCA is able to provide this program free to both schools and students. In partnership with ECU, YMCA will deliver this program in 45 Perth primary schools, reaching approximately 2,250 children.
