There are five food groups:
- Breads, cereals, rice, pasta, noodles
- Vegetables, legumes
- Fruit
- Milk, yoghurt, cheese
- Meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts, legumes
These foods provide the nutrients that are important for good health and well being. The type of food and the amount we eat of it will affect our body size, energy levels and general feeling of wellness. It is vital that we develop good eating habits, preferably as children, so they can be carried with us into adulthood. This means eating a variety of food from each food group, using the proportions shown by the guide. Other foods, or treats, should only be eaten occasionally and in small amounts. The other very important factor is making sure we drink plenty of water every day.
