My Muscles

Muscles are an essential part of the human body. They perform four vital functions: They maintain body posture, stabilise joints, produce movement and generate heat.

There are three types of muscle:

  1. Skeletal muscle is attached to the skeleton by tendons. It assists with skeletal movement such as locomotion and in maintaining posture. Skeletal muscles are voluntary muscles (under conscious control).
  2. Smooth muscle is found in various parts of the body such as the esophagus, stomach, intestines, bladder and blood vessels. Unlike skeletal muscle, smooth muscle is not under conscious control (involuntary)
  3. Cardiac muscle is only found in the walls of the heart. Cardiac muscle is also an involuntary muscle.
